Where to Eat

The conference venue is located in the heart of Budapest, an area abundant with a variety of restaurants, cafés, and bars offering cuisines from around the world. While we’ve compiled a list of nearby dining options, many other excellent establishments are available. Given the limited lunch break, it’s advisable to inquire about the expected service time before ordering. Opting for the daily menu, where available, can often expedite service.

As it became a major tourist destination, recently Budapest underwent a food revolution. Besides the traditional restaurants offering mediocre services at high prices (note: a rule of thumb would be that if there is “live gypsy music” on offer and an excess of paprika in the decoration, you probably do not want to enter), there are exciting new restaurants and cafes all over the city. From expensive Michelin starred restaurants to cheaper places with great food and even food-trucks the food-scene has something for everyone.

Foreign Exchange and Banking Facilities

Major credit cards are widely accepted in Hungary at establishments displaying the appropriate logos. Although Hungary is an EU member, only a few shops and restaurants accept Euros (EUR) for payment. Currency exchange booths are available throughout Budapest, including at airport terminals, railway stations, travel agencies, banks, and various city locations. Exchange rates may vary; for current official rates, consult reputable sources. ATMs are plentiful, located at banks, hotels, and on streets, facilitating easy cash withdrawals using ATM or credit cards.

Public Transport in Budapest

Budapest boasts an efficient public transport network managed by the Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK). Services include buses, trams, trolleybuses, and four metro lines, generally operating between 4:30 AM and 11:00 PM. Night bus services cover major routes after hours, with schedules posted at stops and metro stations. Three metro lines intersect at Deák Square in the city center, running at intervals of 2-15 minutes from approximately 4:30 AM to 11:15 PM. Additionally, five suburban railway lines (HÉV) serve the city’s outskirts. For maps, timetables, ticket information, and more, visit the BKK’s official website. Budapest also offers a public bike-sharing scheme called BuBi, alongside several private rental services.

Taxis in Budapest

Budapest taxis feature yellow number plates and a yellow taxi sign. Avoid unregistered vehicles lacking these identifiers. All licensed taxis are equipped with taximeters that provide printed receipts upon request. As of May 2023, regulated taxi fares are:

  • Base fare: 1,100 HUF
  • Per kilometer: 440 HUF
  • Waiting time: 6,600 HUF per hour

These rates apply uniformly, regardless of time or day. Payments can be made in cash (HUF or EUR) or by credit card; however, it’s advisable to confirm payment methods with the driver beforehand. For accurate fare estimates, consider using reputable taxi fare calculators.
